FAQ's

Getting Started:

If you require pricing for a translation project, and have not registered as a client, please visit our Quick Quote page. (If you have already registered as a client, you may use your login to post a new quote request.)

First enter your contact information. Next select your project information starting with the services you require. What do you want as your final output? Do you just need the text in a Word file (Translation Only)? or will the translated text need to be laid out in a desktop publishing program such as Quark or PageMaker (Translation and Desktop Publishing)?

If you require DTP, are the source files available to you with the artwork and fonts? Are the files for a PC or a MAC? Will it be printed in the United States or overseas? Will you need an A4 format? Do you have a required turnaround? Please include these requirements in the comments section.

Then decide on the target region for which you are requiring translation. For example, is it Spanish for Mexico or for Europe? There are regional differences to consider. Just as footpath and sidewalk mean the same thing in English, one is for the target region of Britain and the other for the United States. You may select more than one language by holding the Control key.

The last step is to upload the file requiring translation. Using the Browse button and selecting the file from your hard drive completes this step.

Answering these questions will help you to outline your project specifics, so when you contact 4Translation, you know exactly what you need. Please visit our services page for more information.

Do you provide translation software?

No. 4Translation only provides publication-quality language services. Native-speaking professional translators proficient in your specific industry complete our translations. We have tested many machine translation software packages and have found most commercially available systems are only 60% accurate. This technology can be useful to provide a draft translation or gist. However, it cannot be used for technical material for distribution.

The site asks me to upload an electronic version of the document. All I have is a hard copy. What can I do?

This is not a problem as long as all you need returned is a Word document and all of the text in the hard copy is legible. Please be aware we cannot recreate the layout, but the text will flow the same. Just fax your hard copy with contact information and project requirements to +01 303.683.2874. A customer service representative will receive your fax and call you to confirm receipt.

I have a rather large project (the file is over 1.5 MB) and there are many files associated with it. What is the best way to send it to you?

For a quotation, you only need to send the PDF of the source files. We will evaluate project requirements based upon the PDF information and not require all of the native files until the proposal is accepted.

If the PDF is very large or if you have accepted the proposal, our integrated file transfer system is the preferred method to send files. You may access this by either:

  1. For an accepted proposal: Log into your account and place the files in the Document Management area.
  2. For a new client proposal: Send the files through the Quick Quote page - Step 3

How quickly can I get this back?

We work to get your project completed in a timely manner while ensuring quality work. As most translators work at a rate of 2,000 words per day, though it may be more or less depending on the technical nature of the text, it is possible to have a small document returned to you the next day! Desktop publishing does add time to a project, so return formats are an important factor to consider. Translator workload and other factors also have to be considered.

The best way to determine how long it will take is to submit your file for quotation. We will evaluate your file and include in your quotation schedule and pricing information. Log into your account to submit a new request for pricing or go to the Quick Quote page. Please note work does not begin until receipt of your completed Notice to Proceed.

I am taking bids from other companies. You are higher in price. Can you explain why?

Though we are proud of our competitive pricing, our main focus has and always will be quality. “You get what you pay for" is an old adage that often rings true. If you are seeking qualified, experienced translators, you will often pay more. When you are shopping around, please make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Does the other quote include an independent edit? And a word to the wise; scrutinize any bid that is outrageously low. A low bid generally indicates lack of experience or desperation, neither of which adds value to your project.
